Shakespeare Prep is a three-day workshop that begins with a live performance of Shakespeare scenes. Over the workshop, students gain familiarity with a specific Shakespeare play and acquire the tools needed to unpack Shakespeare’s language.  They learn how professional actors prepare for Shakespearean roles and are encouraged to form and voice their own interpretations of his work.

Below are the steps we take to make Shakespeare ACCESSIBLE for students of any age.

What We Cover:

PERFORMANCE

We start with a performance (with professional actors) of selected Shakespeare scenes from the play the students are reading.

PLOT OVERVIEW

Next, we discuss the plot of the Shakespeare play and break it down into acts, covering the surface layer of WHAT HAPPENS in the play.

SCENES & THEMES

Students read selected scenes from the Shakespeare play and identify THEMES and QUESTIONS that Shakespeare is exploring. We believe that Shakespeare worked very hard to inspire questions rather than answers in his work!

COMPREHENSION

We unpack short sections of text and students examine exactly what is being spoken, word by word.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

It’s helpful to have a historical context of when and why Shakespeare was writing his plays. In this section, we look at how THE WORLD Shakespeare lived in influenced the themes he was exploring.

PERFORMANCE & INTERPRETATIONS

Break a leg! Students have the opportunity to perform Shakespeare themselves, exploring different interpretations and points of view.
